Dr. Rãzvan Diaconescu: short biography


Dr. Rãzvan Diaconescu was born on 19 March 1964 in Ploiesti, Romania, where he received his elementary and high school education. He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics, Department of Computer Science at Universitatea Bucuresti in 1987 and in 1988 completed his Master degree (Computing and Algebra) at the same Faculty under the supervision of Professor Virgil Emil Cãzãnescu. In 1994 he got the PhD degree from the University of Oxford (Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Computing Laboratory) under the supervision of famous Professor Joseph Goguen.


During 1988-1990, Dr. Rãzvan Diaconescu had been working as a consultant for the Institute of Mathematics "Simion Stoilow" of the Romanian Academy (IMAR). Since 1990 he is holding a tenure position at IMAR, where in 1995 he became Principal Researcher III, in 1997 Principal Researcher II, and finally in 2001 Principal Researcher I (equivalent to full Professor) .

His work belongs to the trend within Computing Science started by Professor Joseph Goguen; his projects are closely related to projects developed by Professor Joseph Goguen and/or his collaborators.

Dr. Diaconescu has also been working as a Visiting Researcher at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California (September 1994) and at the Japan Advanced Institute for Science and Technology, Hokuriku as Associate and in charge of the Panasonic Fujitsu USAC Endowed Chair (between 1996-1999) where he played the major role in the definition of the CafeOBJ language, supported on a large scale by the Japanese Government through its Information-technology Promotion Agency


Since 1992 he is a co-founder of KB7, an international computing partnership trying to disseminate advanced research in Computing Science to industry.


Dr. Rãzvan Diaconescu has received various research awards and grants, such as the J. William Fulbright Award (1996), the US National Research Council Resident Research Associateship Award (1995), a Romanian Academy Grant for basic research in information science and technology (1995), and he was the scientific coordinator for several cooperation projects between Romania-Japan and Romania-Greece.
